GUEST BLOGGER: Brandon Dale

Are you tired of boarding your pup when you travel? Take them to the dog-friendly city of Savannah and walk through 22 historic squares, a colonial cemetery, and the 30 acres of Forsyth Park with a leash in hand. The city’s open layout is perfect for walks and restaurants with outdoor seating provide pups with cold water. Many shops and businesses also accommodate, but certainly not all of them. The key to bringing a dog to Savannah is to know who welcomes your best friend.

Enjoying the warm sun and a nice walk, Savannah's squares and parks are perfect for dogs!

You can bring your pup down to the Savannah Riverfront along the beautiful red-bricked River Street and dine at Huey’s on the River, Olympia Café, Tubby’s Seafood, and Boar’s Head Grill and Tavern. Outside tables are limited, but if you like to watch the barges and boats pass by, the wait is worth it.

The riverfront area is a great place to bring your dog, especially with the nearby and spacious Emmet Park. It sits on top of the bluff along East Bay Street and is filled with memorials and plenty of room to run around.

Across the street from the park on the corner of Habersham Street is B. Matthew’s Eatery, which is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Its sister restaurant, Blowin’ Smoke, has an open patio and is further down Habersham, just a couple blocks south of Anderson Street. For Southern fine dining, go two blocks over from B. Matthew’s Eatery to Vic’s on the River and to Reynolds Square to The Olde Pink House. They both welcome dogs to dine with you on their patios with outside seating sections.

Two Squares over, in the area, known as City Market, next to Ellis Square is the Wild Wing Café, Anna’s, the pizzeria Vinnie Van Go Go’s, the Café at City Market, and the A.T. Hun Art Gallery and who all welcome dogs. If your pup is small enough to carry, you can bring her inside the Savannah Candy Kitchen and grab a praline. Before you leave the area stop by The Grateful Hound at the south end of Ellis Square for dog apparel, accessories, and canine-inspired art gifts.

Next, you can head up to Broughton Street and stop by Nourish for all natural soaps, candles, and bath products, Cardeologie for greeting cards and Half-Moon Outfitters for outdoor clothing and gear. The Coffee Fox, Kayak Kafé, and Funky Brunch Café are down the street and have several outside tables and usually a water bowl.

Leopold’s Ice Cream, also on Broughton, offers pups free sundaes topped with locally made and gluten free Ollie B. Biscuits. And a great way to walk off the ice cream is with a Historic Dog Walk Tour of downtown. Start at Wright square at Oliver Bentley’s LTD and learn the city’s history from a dog’s perspective. If the tour isn’t for you, stop by the shop and say hi to the company mascot, the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Ollie B.

Around the corner up Bull Street, there are more dining options with outside seating like the Public Kitchen and Bar, Fire Street Food, Mellow Mushroom, Gallery Espresso, and the Six Pence Pub. Dogs are also welcome across the street from the pub at the Perry Rubber Bike Shop. For breakfast and lunch Clary’s Café and J. Christopher’s are great options, along with Firefly Café in Troup Square where pups can drink from the Myers Drinking Fountain. There are more low water fountains at the sprawling Forsyth Park as well as the Sentient Bean, which is perfect for a cup of coffee and vegetarian organic food.

South of the downtown area the Bass Pro Shop, Tailspin, The Canine Palace and the Savannah Botanical Gardens also allow man’s best friend. The city of Savannah is great place to visit, especially if you have your favorite pup at your side. So skip the call to doggy day care, and bring everyone along to the Low Country.
